The course B.Sc Dispensing optics and ophthalmic dispensing will deal with the art of making and dispensing the ophthalmic lens and prisms. The students will be trained on making the lens, troubleshooting the problems with lenses and prisms, marketing and dispensing to the patient, managerial skills in running an Optical retail outlet, and to become a part of primary eye care delivery.

ELIGIBILITY: Completed 12th Std from a recognized board with Mathematics and science subjects with 60% marks

COURSE DURATION: 3 years of study and 1 year of Clinical Internship

AFFILIATION: Periyar University (Bachelor of Science degree) and FBDO (in collaboration with Association of British Dispensing Opticians, UK)

COMMENCING: 16 th July 2015

NUMBER OF ENROLLMENT: 30 students per year

COURSE DETAILS:

1. In this course conducted by The Sankara Nethralaya Academy, the students will be exposed on various fields of dispensing both theory and practices aspects.

2. The course comprises subjects like Basic human science subjects like Anatomy and physiology and Basic Ocular science subjects like ocular anatomy and physiology, Basic optics including physical, geometrical, visual and Ophthalmic Optics.

3. They will be trained primarily on theory and practical part of Refraction and dispensing (i.e.) finding the patient's refractive error, prescription writing, finding the power of existing glasses, surfacing and fitting the lens in frames, surfacing and fitting of prisms.

4. The students will also experience marketing aspects of dispensing, customer handing, frame selection, spectacle measurements, troubleshooting the problems with prescriptions and glasses made.

5. They will also have hands on dispensing low vision device for partially sighted people, and the trained persons will also act as a style consultant in helping people choosing appropriate tints, frames, lens materials and designs.
