The Sankara Nethralaya Academy, (A unit of Medical Research Foundation), established in 2010 has been an institution to reckon with offering various courses in Allied Healthcare under several domains in the past decade. As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR),TSNA has been offering scholarships to many students from underprivileged backgrounds in the lower socio-economic strata of the society. The scholarships are either partial or full-fledged, and aid students to complete their education, becoming useful members to their family, organisation & community. The financial aids that we receive from individual donors like you, corporate donors, charitable trusts and other not-for-profit organisations, are passed on to the students to assist in completion of their education. Over 200 students have benefitted from various scholarships instituted by both private and institutional donors.

Manjula hails from Tirupattur in North Arcot district and was born to parents with meagre means.
Her father a house painter and mother a house wife. She has two younger brothers, aged 18 and 19. She joined The SNAcademy in 2015 and was provided scholarship to cover her tution fees. Since she always defaulted on payment of hostel and mess fees, she was also supported with a fee waiver to cover her hostel fees. In her second year of studies unfortunately, her father committed suicide following unemployment and domestic disputes. She went on to complete her B.Sc Ophthalmic Dispensing (a 4 year Bachelor’s degree affiliated to Periyaruniversity) and is currently employed at SN Optical services as a Lens Coordinator. She supports herself and her family with the salary she earns. Her work day involves helping patients coming to SN Optical services find appropriate spectacle frames, lenses and other necessary accessories and counsel them with compliance and regular follow up visits.
When asked to describe her feelings, she says, “I am the first graduate in my family. I am proud to say that I completed my degree, that too in the field of Allied Health Sciences. I never thought that I would work in such a large eye hospital therefore it’s a dream come true moment for me’ Today Manjula is a confident young girl and useful member of the society contributing to patient care.

Arun Kumar was a student of BBA- Hospital & Healthcare Management at The Sankara Nethralaya Academy, from Parayanthangal village, Villupuram district.
His father was suffering from kidney disorder since many years and expired when he was studying in BBA- 1st year and his mother is a housewife and he has one younger school going brother. He comes from financially unstable background. After the death of his father they did not have any source of income, he almost decided to quit the course that’s when he got referred from an employee of Sankara Nethralaya about scholarships provided to the students for their education. Sankara Nethralaya along with Thulasi trust helped him complete the degree
Successfully and He is now working as Patient service Coordinator in Sankara Nethralaya. His job role includes coordinating with for their treatment needs, helping to file insurance, fixing up surgery date.
When asked to describe his feelings, He says “At the time when my father expired I never thought I would be able to continue by degree, it was a huge help that Sankara Nethralaya provided for which I will be very grateful and try my maximum to contribute towards the society”.
Presently, Arun Kumar is a confident, independent earning member of his family supporting his mother and younger brother and also contributing Sankara Nethralaya with is tremendous commitment an sincerity towards patient care.
