“TEJAS VINAVADHI THAMASTU – MAY OUR STUDY BE BRILLIANT”

Aim of COE:
For last 12 yrs West Bengal and other states of Eastern India have witnessed an enormous growth of optometry and emergence of many optometry colleges. In the absence of attached eye hospitals of many optometry schools, the final year students undergo one year compulsory internship program in various reputed eye hospitals. The Sankara Nethralaya, Kolkata, since its inception, is catering the academic and clinical needs of optometry students by providing its unique one year internship program uninterruptedly for last seven years. Determined to provide better knowledge to optometry students of Eastern India, our institution is launching another unique and fruitful continuous program (COE) for the benefit of the third year students of optometry. This will be a bi-monthly pre-internship training program, which will enable the third year students of effectively handling various optometric instruments and efficiently performing various basic optometric procedures in a very interactive and friendly environment.
CONTENT OF THE PROGRAM:

1. The Mystery of Refraction

The Scissoring reflex—how to neutralize? +4.50 D cycloplegic refraction in 3 yrs old baby—what to prescribe? 36 yrs old, but accepting addition for near—what to do? Dissimilarity between objective and subjective refraction—what to do? The optometrists have to encounter so many puzzles and difficulties everyday while refracting a patient. This program is aimed at addressing those unasked questions in a very interactive way. A workshop on effective utilization of equipments like retinoscope, lensmeter, keratometer and autorefractometer and efficiently performing the objective and subjective refraction is the unique feature of this session.

This unique session will address a very important instrument called slit lamp which is used for the diagnosis of anterior segment diseases. Learning slit lamp examination in a hospital set up will be a unique experience for the students. This session will give a hands-on experience of slit lamp as well as anterior segment pictures and videos of real patients.

3. Basic Eye Examination

A pen torch and a pocket vision chart can help us to diagnose a lot of difficult eye diseases. This session is most attractive among all sessions. The students will be exposed to various simple and inexpensive tools like pocket vision charts, pen torch, color vision charts, pin hole, amsler chart etc and taught to perform different procedures like EOM evaluation, pupil examination, color vision testing, confrontation method, basic squint examination, assessing IOP, ptosis and proptosis evaluation, assessing dry eye with Schirmer strip and so many. In the modern era we pay attention to lot of hi-tech gadgets and some time least attention to those simple instruments, which actually can lead us to many bigger diagnoses.
